The Delta County Sheriff's Office is the main law enforcement agency for the county. Sheriff Todd Tardiff leads the office, with Undersheriff Phil Griebel. The sheriff handles road patrol, corrections, and criminal investigations throughout Delta County. For most records requests, you will start here or at the county courthouse.

How to Search Delta County Criminal Records
The main tool for searching criminal records in Delta County is the Michigan State Police ICHAT system. ICHAT stands for Internet Criminal History Access Tool. It gives you access to criminal history records compiled by the Michigan State Police from courts and law enforcement agencies across the state, including Delta County. You can search by name at apps.michigan.gov/ichat. There is a small fee per search. Results include felony and misdemeanor convictions, as well as some pending charges.
For court case records specifically, use MiCOURT Case Search at micourt.courts.michigan.gov. This system covers circuit, district, and probate courts across Michigan. You can look up Delta County cases by party name or case number. The system shows docket entries, hearing dates, case status, and basic charge information. It does not show full documents, but it gives you enough to identify the case you need.
If you need the actual court documents, you will need to contact the Delta County Circuit Court Clerk in Escanaba. Staff can pull case files and make copies on request. Under MCL 15.231, most court records are public and available to anyone who asks. Bring a valid ID and the name or case number of the record you need.
Note: Delta County does not maintain its own separate online criminal record database, so ICHAT and MiCOURT are your best starting points for online searches.
FOIA Requests in Delta County
Delta County handles public records requests through the Freedom of Information Act process under MCL 15.231. You can submit a FOIA request to the County Administration office or to the Sheriff's Office for law enforcement records. The county website at deltacountymi.gov has the forms you need, including the standard FOIA Request for Public Records form, a notice to extend response time, and a notice of denial form.
Once you submit a request, the county has five business days to respond. They can extend that deadline by up to ten additional business days if the request is complex or involves a large number of records. If the cost of filling your request exceeds $50, the office may ask for a 50% deposit before it starts work. For online payment of court fines and some fees, Delta County uses the GovPayNet system.
The Michigan State Police also has a separate FOIA process for records held by MSP. Use the MSP FOIA portal for those requests. Records from the state police are separate from what the county clerk or sheriff holds, so you may need to submit requests to both if you are looking for complete information.
Fees for Delta County Records
Delta County charges standard copying fees for public records. Paper copies cost $0.10 per sheet. If the request involves locating records, the county may charge for labor in 15-minute increments at the hourly rate of the lowest-paid employee who can do the work. These fees are set under Michigan FOIA law and apply to requests to the county clerk, sheriff, and other county offices.
Court fees for certified copies and case filings are set by the state and may vary by document type. Contact the Delta County Circuit Court Clerk directly for a current fee schedule. The Probate Court has its own fee schedule for records in that court. ICHAT background checks through the Michigan State Police cost a small per-search fee payable online at the time of your search.
Michigan Statewide Criminal Record Resources
Delta County residents and researchers can use several Michigan state tools in addition to local resources. The OTIS offender tracking system shows the location and status of people in Michigan Department of Corrections custody. The Michigan Sex Offender Registry shows registered offenders by address or name. Both systems are free and public.
The Michigan Department of Corrections runs the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS), which covers people in prison or on parole in Michigan. If someone from Delta County is serving time with MDOC, you can search for them there. The search is free and shows facility location, offense, and projected release date.
The Michigan Sex Offender Registry at michigan.gov/psor is required under Michigan law and updated regularly. You can search by name, address, or zip code. Offenders are required to register under state law, and failure to comply is itself a criminal offense. Delta County offenders who meet the registration threshold are listed in the statewide database.
OTIS is the official MDOC tool for finding inmates and parolees. If you believe someone from Delta County is under MDOC supervision, this is where to check.
The Michigan Sex Offender Registry covers all counties including Delta. Search by name or location to find registrants in the Escanaba area.
